What to check before you list a children’s line

Children’s oral care raises some specific questions. There are six general points that are worth clarifying with any supplier, including Pierrot.

1. The age range printed on the pack. A children’s toothpaste may be intended for a particular age range. We recommend asking which age band each reference declares and checking it against the way your market segments the shelf.

2. The fluoride content, per reference. Requirements for the composition of kids toothpaste may differ from one country to another. We recommend requesting this information for each reference and asking a local regulatory adviser to confirm it against local rules.

3. The characters on the pack. It is worth asking any supplier about the characters used on a kids range. Sharky and Unicorn are the characters of the Pierrot kids range.

4. The language on the pack. Children’s products may have specific labelling needs, so the language on the pack is worth reviewing. We recommend clarifying the labelling requirements of your market at an early stage.

5. The unit of sale. Children’s brushes may be sold in different units depending on the channel. We recommend confirming the unit of sale with the supplier.

6. Continuity. A children’s block benefits from continuity on the shelf. We recommend asking whether the references belong to the regular catalogue.

Why the kids block matters on the shelf

It is worth considering children’s oral care as a category in its own right. The following are general considerations.

 1. It is part of family oral care Choosing a children’s toothpaste is part of the oral care routine of a family.

 2. It is a consumable category Children’s brushes are consumable products, so it is worth assessing the rotation of the category in your channel.

 3. It supports early oral care habits Oral care habits begin in childhood, and a kids range can accompany that stage.

 4. It complements the adult range A kids range complements the adult assortment. The children’s block can be considered alongside the rest of the shelf.
