For total hygiene it is essential to combine your usual technique with the best oral care products and, above all, to know how to use them without damaging your gums.

Why dental floss is essential

A toothbrush only cleans around 60% of the surface of your teeth. The remaining 40% is in the interdental spaces, plaque’s favourite hiding place for causing cavities or tartar.

Using floss is not an optional extra : it is the only way to break up the biofilm in the contact areas between teeth. At Pierrot we know that a healthy smile depends on this small daily gesture which, although it takes a little practice at first, makes an enormous difference in preventing conditions such as gingivitis.

Steps for using dental floss effectively

Follow these steps to use dental floss correctly and remove all debris from your mouth without damaging your gums:

The right length: cut about 45 to 50 centimetres of floss. Wind most of it around the middle fingers of both hands, leaving about 5 centimetres free to work with.

Tension and control: hold the floss firmly between your thumbs and index fingers. Slide the floss gently between your teeth with a sawing motion (do not force it straight down towards the gum, you could cut yourself).

The “C” curve: when the floss reaches the gum line, curve it into a C shape against one of the teeth and slide it gently into the space between the gum and the tooth.

Vertical movements: slide the floss up and down (and back again) against the side of each tooth. Repeat the process using a clean section of floss for each gap.

Recommendations for using dental floss well

If you want flossing to be easier and more effective, bear these practical tips in mind:

Do not skimp on floss: always use a clean section for each gap. If you reuse the same stretch, you will be moving bacteria from one tooth to another.

Consistency is key: ideally use it once a day, preferably before going to bed.

Never share dental floss: as with a toothbrush, dental floss is strictly for personal use. Sharing it means a direct exchange of bacteria and micro-organisms.

Combine it with mouthwash: after flossing, a final rinse helps wash away any debris left loose.

Mastering the use of dental floss is one of the best investments you can make in your long-term health. It may seem tedious at first, but once you perfect the technique it becomes an essential habit.

We often focus our whole routine on brushing, but cleaning is not complete if we do not reach those corners the bristles cannot get into.
